Using the map

Map tools

  • Zoom In
    The Zoom In tool can be used either by clicking and dragging on the map, to draw the outline of a zoom box, or by clicking on the map.
  • Zoom Out
    The Zoom out tool can be used by dragging on the map, to draw the outline of a zoom box, or by clicking on the map.
  • Zoom to Full Extent
    To zoom to the full extent of the map, click on the full extent tool. The map will re-draw to the full extent of the City.
  • Pan
    The Pan tool can be used by dragging the map or by clicking on the map - the map will either re-position where dragged, or re-centre at the point clicked.
  • Identify
    Click on the identify tool - a list of visible layers will display. Select a layer and then click on the area or item, on the map, which you wish to identify (examples would be either a Ward area, or the location of a school). The information will appear in a box above the map.
  • Panning by direction
    Four buttons are displayed for moving the map east, west, south or north. Click on the applicable button and the map area displayed will move in that direction.
  • Zooming in and out on the map
    A toolbar is available to the right of the map, which allows zooming in and out of the map, without clicking on the map.
  • Zoom using Scale
    Enter a new scale in the text box above the map and click on the 'GO' button. The map will re-draw at the new scale.
  • Display Aerial Photography
    Click on the 'On' option above the map, to display Aerial Photography. Clicking on 'Off' will remove the photography from the map.
  • Displaying the map Key
    To display the map 'Key' click on the 'On' option above the map. A key clarifying which layers are visible and their icons, will be displayed over the map. To hide the Key click on the 'Off' option.

Using the Search Options

Clicking on the 'Search' option above the map will display a page offering the option of finding an address or 'Find my Nearest'.

  • Find my Nearest
    Enter a postcode, or postcode and house name/number, then select an option from the list (e.g. 'School'). This will search for the nearest (School) to the address you have input. To view the location of the nearest, click on the 'View on map' link. A yellow arrow is displayed on the map at it's location.
  • Find an address
    Enter an address or part of an address (e.g. Organisation name) and click on 'GO'. A list of matching addresses will be displayed. To view the address on the map click on the 'View address on map' link.

Adding and removing layers on the map

Data is displayed on the map as a 'layer'. The layers of data are categorised by the options displayed at the left of the map (e.g. 'Council & Democracy', 'Education', etc). By clicking on a category a list of available layers will be displayed as a options below each category.

  • Adding a layer of data
    To add a layer click on the layer in the menu - the map will re-draw with the layer displayed. Some layers are only displayed at certain scales - e.g. schools would nt display at the full extent of the city. To display simply zoom into the map to a lower scale. When a layer has been added the icon next to the layer name will become green.
  • Removing a layer of data
    To remove a layer which is currently displayed, click on the layer in the menu - the map will re-draw with the layer removed.
